"I first met Bill Thomas in 1991, at the Tbilisi airport in what was then the Soviet Georgia. The Soviet Union was collapsing, and Bill had just arrived from Moscow to write about Georgia's struggle for independence. With the Red Army poised for invasion and the outcome of events anything but certain, just having an American journalist there made people feel things would turn out for the better. That the American happened to be Bill Thomas was a blessing for Georgia.
